US Open Champion – Gold & Silver Medalist
Valentin Milkov won Gold in the 4x100 Individual Medley Relay and Silver in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay at the 2001 US Open Swimming Championships — one of the most defining achievements of his international swimming career.

Competing Through Severe Adversity
Only months before the 2001 US Open Championships, Valentin suffered a severe illness that caused nerve damage in his shoulder, leading to the loss of function in a major muscle. Despite this physical setback, he returned to elite competition and delivered medal-winning performances.
Final Major Championship
The US Open ultimately became Valentin Milkov’s final major international competition. The affected muscle never fully recovered, making these medal performances a defining moment of resilience, discipline, and competitive excellence.
A Rare Decision: Declining Two Olympic Games
In 2004, nearly four years after the injury, Valentin Milkov qualified for the Olympic Games despite the muscle not having recovered. However, he made the extraordinary decision to decline participation due to health limitations and academic priorities.
Earlier in his career he had also declined Olympic participation to pursue academic opportunities in the United States — choosing long-term development and education over immediate competition.
While competing in numerous World and European Championships, his closest finish at a global event came at the 1999 World Military Games where he placed sixth, narrowly missing the podium.
The US Open medals therefore represent not only competitive success but also resilience, character, and principled decision-making at the highest level of sport.
